I have cross-referenced all the baptisms, marriages, burials and confirmations of Creggan Parish that relate to my family tree and that are available to me from a range of sources. My primary source was PRONI MIC 1-11. Some names are included only because they also reside in or near a significant townland - for example, Urker. Many of my notes are not much more than conjecture. Please take them with a grain of salt. In total, there are about 54 pages of transcriptions of burial records and my notes. Dozens of names are mentioned.

Burials at Creggan Parish MIC 1 – 11
NOTE: My focus has been on
families connected in some way to the JACKSONs of Urker and Liscalgat. Although
this graveyard is interdenominational, the Church of Ireland burials are the
only ones recorded in the Parish records. Dates and info which I have added or changed
from previous transcripts are highlighted in red.

NOTE: This inscription,
recorded before 1972, is identical to one found at Gilford Castle. There was
also a transcription of a 2nd grave marker which was probably already “gone” and hence not recorded in
1970-72. It is also missing in recent photographs. It was probably done by “Mattie” Maud Martha Elizabeth SKUSE
née REED (1878-1958), daughter of Robert Hamilton REED & Margaret JACKSON
(1853-1944). The line breaks which I have shown as “/” are as they were in
the transcription.:
2nd stone on right facing church. To the memory
of George Jackson / late of Creggan who departed this / life Sept 3rd 1782 aged 64 years / also to the memory of Margaret Jackson / wife of the
above named. /George Jackson who departed this/ life the 7th day
of Dec 1797 / in the 75th year of his age / and also / To the
memory of their son David / Jackson late of Liscalgat. - he died / suddenly

above George who / departed this life 28th September 1790 aged 70.
NOTE: The stone was
undoubtedly hard to read when this transcription was done. 1706 may have been 1756.
A 2nd David was born after this David had died. Culaner was most likely Gilmore since family
records at Gilford Castle recorded that a Mary JACKSON married a J. GILMORE
(1764-1823) some time before 1788. Also Mary JACKSON’s age at death was more likely
to be 40, not 70.

JACKSON (d. 1790 - daughter of George JACKSON & Margaret O’LAUGHLIN) and had
two children: Martha & John. With his 2nd wife [unnamed so far], he was
the father of both Samuel GILMORE (1795-1868) and George GILMORE (1799-1832)
of Coolderry (d 1832).
Also probably the John

she is indicated here as being at Urker, I do not know. No WALLACE shows up
there in the 1828 records, but her husband John WALLACE is also recorded as being
from Urker, Clogher. Interestingly, I have another “orphan WALLACE”: in 1839,
a Richard JACKSON of Tullyvallen married a Mary WALLACE. Since the DONALDSONS
who were Anne - aka Jane - WALLACE's parents were also of Tullyvallen, this
starts to get even more interesting.

He was the husband of firstly Emelia HOAR and secondly of
Jane DONALDSON. His son Robert Grenville WALLACE was born to his first wife in
1786. His daughters Mary Anne(1795), Jane (1806), Margaret(1811) Eliza &
Kathleen were from his second marriage. Is it possible that although he was
of Cloghog, that he died at Urcher? There seems to be two records.
Here are deposited the remains of John Wallace, Cloghog
Lodge, Attorney at Law who died 30th January 1827 aged 67 years and of Jane
his wife who died 13th April 1823 aged 55 years, leaving behind them an

to the will of Providence taking with them to this grave the sighs the tears

“LOY”. In later years, the LOWE family made their home at Cloghog Lodge.. There
was also an unnamed Alice who married a Samuel DONALDSON (1753-1827 – son of
William DONALDSON & Agnes). They probably married about 1780 – given that
the births of 6 children start in 1783. The latter is a strong candidate for
being this person, but this needs to be verified.

B 1770
Probably the previously unnamed
daughter of David JACKSON & Margaret BRADFORD (they were said to have 3
daughters, and only 2 were named). She was probably a twin of Richard JACKSON (1770-1848) husband of Sarah McKEE and associated
with the Freeduff Church, but buried after dying at Liscalgat..
Probably not a daughter of
George JACKSON (1718-1782) & Margaret O’LAUGHLIN (1722-1797),. That Elizabeth
JACKSON married a George SHEA or a Thomas SHEA and women were generally recorded
under their husband’s surnames. Also, the projected date of birth of 1770 would
make her mother about 48 years old. Not impossible, but a bit late in life. One
of Margaret O’LAUGHIN’s sons, John JACKSON (bef 1744-aft 1805) of Liscalgat
or Urker, may have had a wife named Elizabeth. NOTE: There is also another JACKSON family

was presented with an Address and a Piece of Plate. Bro. Johnston resigned

married the niece of Captain James McCullagh, Camlymacullagh, and owned part
of the McCullagh estate. There is another memorial to him in Donaghmoyne
Parish Church which reads. "In loving memory of John Reed Esqr of Rahans
for many years churchwarden of this parish. This table was erected by his
brother James and Willian Reed".
1970 reading
of inscription:
"Sacred

1860 in the 91st year of his age [NOTE: I suspect that the year is incorrect
- an easy error with weathered stones] . This stone is erected by his sister

Chat: Arthur Johnston (Lisdoo) was the son of James Johnston (
Carrickbroad). Carrickbroad was a townland in Armagh on the border with
county Louth. Those Johnstons had almost 2000 acres in Armagh and some land
in Down too. James g g grandfather also owned Knappagh and other property. I
believe his parents were gentry from Ireland " on tour " but
returned home soon after his birth.
NOTE: Arthur JOHNSTON was a
son of Dr. James JOHNSTON, Carrickbroad House, a large landowner and one-time
High Sherriff for Co. Armagh. SOURCE: Guide to Creggan Church &

This is the father of 10 children including Sir Thomas Jackson. NOTE: The minister Rev. John TURNER was not
the minister of Creggan, but of Barronstown. It seems that TURNER had not been hired by the
Creggan congregation - a dispute that probably triggered David JACKSON's quitting
Creggan congregation for some time (see 1885 letters)
SOURCE: 1885 Creggan Church Wardens to David JACKSON This letter
is an appeal for David JACKSON to rejoin Creggan Church. From the content of
a few other letters and reading between the lines, it seems that the finances
of Creggan Church were in disarray at the end of Rev. Dr. Mills tenure (he
had a stroke and was unable to do this part of the job). The controversy may
also have had to do with some circumstances surrounding the death of the
interrim curate Rev. Dr. Thomas CORR. It is curious that his name is not
recorded on the list of curates. A letter 1885 December 2 Eliza Jackson to Thomas Jackson alludes
to a Rev. TURNER being ill treated by Creggan Parish. .
Rev. John Turner, Rector of Barronstown, and formerly
Headmaster of the Dundalk Educational Institution, was a learned and successful
educationalist, and raised the Institute to a very high level in the
educational world. On his retirement he officiated at Killencoole, and also
was Acting Military Chaplain at Dundalk Barracks, prior to his appointment to
Barronstown. His eldest son, Mr. John Wm. Turner, M.A., is the efficient
Agent here to Lord Roden; whilst his second son, Mr. Henry Turner, has been
Resident Magistrate in the South for many years- Rev. John Turner died 1897.

NOTE: There may be a link

It is probable that Sarah
MALLON (1844-?) was one of the illegitimate children of William OLIVER (1828-aft

father was Protestant (son of William OLIVER 91765-1854) & Elizabeth

It seems the couple resided as a couple at Killynure and had at least one
more child.
NOTE: 1901 Census has the
head of household as Margaret WRIGHT age 37 a widow at Cregganbane and a visitor
Mary MELLEN age 64, a widow born in Co.
Monaghan. Her daughter Sarah WRIGHT was age 13 (b abt 1888). father John

WRIGHT age 86 was “grandmother” born in Co. Louth. There as a death cert for a
John WRIGHT Dec 13, 1895, famer, with Sarah WRIGHT mother present at
Cregganbane.
Birth Cert: Sarah WRIGHT jr was b. June3, 1887 dau of
John WRIGHT & Margaret MALLON.
The 1885 marriage of Margaret MALLON & John WRIGHT records her father as “Oliver MALLON”. I can find no
record of an “Oliver MALLON”. It is possible that Sarah went by the names of either “Sarah” or “Margaret” and recorded her
father’s surname OLIVER as a forename in conjunction with her mother’s
surname of MALLON. In the 1911 Census, she was age 48 (b 1863) and had a
visitor Thomas MELLEN. She had a son William James WRIGHT age 19 (b 1892).

John DONALDSON (1818-1854). The three siblings at Kiltybane in the 1901

Probably the Sarah WRIGHT
in the 1901 Census who was age 86 (a discrepancy of 5 years with the parish
record). She was born in Co. Louth, and was living with her widowed daughter
Margaret in Cregganban, Crossmaglen. Her daughter was a "farmer". |

b. 1837
He does not appear in the 1901 Census, although there is a
listing for a Robert CAULTER. This is an obvious mis-transcription. The pdf
makes it clear that it was a Robert (age 54) & Eliza COULTER (age 52) who both lived and farmed in Dorsy. They were no longer there in
1911. |

the same John TIPPING – the age at death may be off - a baptism for a John

PRONI: Administration of the estate of John Tipping
late of 48 Mountcollyer-street Belfast Gardener who died 30 May 1905 granted

1913 Aug 6 |
B: 1853 or 1861
Death Cert: Bachelor, age 52, Farmer, d. at
Kiltybane.
Probably he was the son of
John DONALDSON (1818-1854) & Elizabeth Johanna JACKSON (1817-1900). They
had 4 children: Alexander, Elizabeth Johanna, John & James.
NOTE: I had initially had
his birth date based on the census report as 1856.
This would have been after his father’s death. The date of 1853 is a fit.
1901
Census John
DONALDSON (age 45 - b 1856), James DONALDSON (age 34
- b 1867) and Elizabeth DONALDSON (age 47 - b 1854 – although her death cert
gives her age at death in 1919 as 68) are all living at Kiltybane. It is
recorded under the DED of Lisleitrim. Older records show it under the Parish
of Newtownhamilton.
1911
Census, they are now all recorded as Catholic. John DONALDSON (age 56 -
b 1855), James DONALDSON (age 63 - b 1848 - a difference of 19 years
from the 1867 date in the 1901 Census) and Elizabeth DONALDSON (age 57 - b
1854) are all living at Kiltybane
NOTE: His brother may be the James
DONALDSON mentioned in a letter Oct
3, 1883 from Eliza JACKSON: James
Donaldson has gone astray in his mind. I have not heard from him for nine days;
the last I heard was that Alexander had taken him home with him. |
