Killynure and 1911 Census
See also: Killynure
The house where Margaret COUSER lived was probably the one in the southwest corner at what is currently known as “Cousers Corner” (according to the local bus driver). The CARROLL house was probably where the large house to the south of the road between Monaghan and Armagh is shown on the Griffiths valuation. The Thompson BROWN House was the house shown with an orchard attached. I can’t say where the other houses were. There is currently some rubble indicating the possibility of a previous cottier style house near the road, south west of the Thompson BROWN property. The FEGAN family are the descendants of the O’NEILs who are recorded in Griffiths as tenants. Their ancestors still live nearby. I know nothing about the others.
One curious fact is the recorded religious allegiances of the COUSERs. In this census, one COUSER household is Roman Catholic and another is Presbyterian. Yet, in the Church of Ireland records at St. Marks, there are COUSERs of Killynure whose given ages indicate that they would have been living in this time frame. Even though they don’t show up in this census and may have been visiting outside the country on census day, the question is: which house would they have been attached to? At the time of the census, Mary COUSER would have been age 30; William Benjamin, age 35; Margaret age 33. The only one of them showing up in Ireland in 1911 who would be close in age is a Mary COUSER who was age 33 and was a servant in the BREW household at Tullyard |
