The earliest known person in this tree was Robert JACKSON (1728-1821) but I have yet to learn who his ancestors may have been. This could be key to better understanding other JACKSON lineages with deep roots in the linen industry and the merchant class that trace back to the mid-1600s.

One of my next steps will be to order copies of deeds in order to compare the actual signatures (and if lucky – family seals) and see if they are a match with other Robert JACKSONs who lived in Ireland during the same time frame.

Robert JACKSON (1728-1821) and his known descendants

The earliest known person in this tree was Robert JACKSON (1728-1821) but I have yet to learn who his ancestors may have been. This could be key to better understanding other JACKSON lineages with deep roots in the linen industry and the merchant class that trace back to the mid-1600s.

Silverbowl website: Some of the JACKSON families who may or may not be ancestors or relations of Robert JACKSON (1728-1821).

·         JACKSONs of Derbyshire, Berkshire, America & Dublin This line of JACKSONs begins with a William JACKSON b. abt 1500 in Sapperton, Derbyshire, England. A merchant family, they had business ties to many other countries: America, France, Belgium, England and Ireland. They also included many Establishment Church clergy. The JACKSONs of Santry (Dublin) have been merged into this tree. Of special interest is Rev Daniel JACKSON (1651-1707) of Santry, Dublin, Ireland. Many of his descendants remained in Ireland.

o   SEE also: Thomas and Samuel Jackson -Pewterers of London.

·         JACKSONs of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland and Coleraine, Londonderry So far, there are not any Robert JACKSONs in the right time frame in this tree to connect with the City of Armagh JACKSONs, although the fore-name of Robert is included.

o   Lieut. Col. Robert JACKSON (aft 1765-aft 1798) was a 1st cousin 3X removed of Rev. Robert JACKSON (1690-1733), and although there are no children recorded for either of them, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

o   Rev. Robert JACKSON (1690-1733) leased lands in Castletownmore near Kells as did the ancestors of Coronet Robert JACKSON (bef 1765-aft 1801) of JACKSONs of Kings Co. - Seirkeiran. NOTE: The birth and death dates for Coronet Robert JACKSON (bef 1765-aft 1801) of Seikeiran and Lieut. Col. Robert JACKSON (aft 1765-aft 1798) (of Coleraine?) are remarkably close.

·         JACKSONs of Kings Co. - Seirkeiran. Another linen family where a Coronet Robert JACKSON (bef 1765-aft 1801) of Seirkeiran leased lands at Castletownmoore near Kells as did the Rev. Robert JACKSON (1690-1733) of JACKSONs of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland and Coleraine, Londonderry.

·         JACKSONs of Tartaraghan, Co. Armagh. There is no overlap in the townlands recorded in the known leases held by these JACKSONs with those held by the relations of Robert JACKSON (1728-1821) of City of Armagh, but these JACKSONs were of the same class and the name Robert JACKSON was common in both families.

·         Jacksons of Tobermore.

·         JACKSONs of Co. Down who first settled in Dundonald. A Robert JACKSON was the first known Irish-based resident in this line.

·         Robert JACKSON of Crooked Staff - Descendants. This tree starts with a Robert JACKSON of Crooked Staff, Dublin who died in 1711. The JACKSONs who were tanners in the late 1600s, are likely related to JACKSONs of Athy, Co. Kildare, and are also likely to be Quakers, or at very least, closely aligned with them through either marriages or business enterprises. In this family tree, there is a tanner Robert JACKSON (1688- aft 1725), Presbyterian of Dublin. We do not have any documentation of a wife or children for him, but this does not mean there were not any.

Castletownmore leases – an example of how leases can suggest place to look for links between families:

Of Castletownmoore. This Rev. John JACKSON was a grandson of Rev. Richard JACKSON (1602-1681) whose many descendants lived in Ireland and England. Irwin has given said PIPPARD £58 to stand as a security for his yearly rent which he forfeits if he suffers himself to be ejected for nonpayment of rent or other ways should leave said lands, but PIPPARD to allow him interest for said sum for said time he holds the same and set profit rent of if last year to go to said Irwin to reimburse him if so long he holds same which reduces [?] 1d  said PIPPARD’s profit rent to £47 pounds 10 shillings rent or clear of all deductions. NOTE: This document was in relation to an 1801 legal case connected to this 1730 Lease which was connected to the JACKSONs of Kings Co. - Seirkeiran.  It is not far-fetched to suggest that Mr Robert JACKSON of Grange was a son of Rev. Robert JACKSON of Tatham (not necessarily the result of a legal marriage).

Signature of Coronet Robert JACKSON (bef 1765-aft1801) of Grange, Kings Co. and later of Dublin. A son, grandson, and great-grandson of a succession of Robert JACKSONs, members of JACKSONs of Kings Co. - Seirkeiran.

·         PRONI T636: Pillow Manuscript: The Jackson Family of Armagh The family lived in a house in Church Lane at the head of Market Street. The first generation of the name in the Corporate records is in the year 1753, when Robert Jackson is mentioned. In 1763 Robert Jackson Armagh, merchant, was a trustee of the first Armagh Presbyterian church, and in an unpublished census of the inhabitants of Armagh, taken in the year 1770 is the following: Church Lane

·         Bradshaw's Directory of the City of Armagh for the year 1819 is the following: - Jackson, Robert & Son, flour merchants, Market Street. Jackson, John, Coal merchant, Abbey Street. John was the name of Robert's son mentioned above. Robert Jackson married first Sarah Knipe but had no issue, he married secondly Elizabeth Shields and by her had issue John, and Robert William, sons and a daughter named Maria; and died November 27, 1821 in his 93rd year. John married daughter of the late Sir William Stamer of Dawson Street Dublin, and had issue at least one son and one daughter. The daughter married James Stanley, but they are both dead. John died on 25 September 1849, age 49 years. His Mother Elizabeth Jackson died on the 3 October, 1834, aged 76 years. Robert William studied law became a counselor, he died unmarried on the 18th day of February  1861 (age 62); leaving some landed property to his sister Maria who had married James Martin of Moy, merchant, they had three sons and three daughters. James Martin died [space left – no date given]

One of the sons named James died last spring, the other named Thomas studied medicine and became a M.D.  He married Emily Pillar and had issue two sons and three daughters.

The Jackson gravestone is in the west side of the Cathedral graveyard, it is a slab of unpolished Armagh marble, and is 7 feet 3 inches long, by 3 feet 3 inches broad. The friend of his early days mentioned on the Tablet, was the late Very Rev. Brabazon William Disney, Dean of Armagh.

Married June 2, 1758 Robert Jackson & Sarah Knipe both of Armagh

Married January 1, 1805 James Martin, Moy & Maria Jackson, Armagh

Although Robert Jackson & Elizabeth Shields lived together as man & wife, it has been said that they were never married.

NOTE: There seems to be a confusion between two John JACKSONs. The John JACKSON (1800-1849) who married Louisa STAMER and the John JACKSON (1800-1819) who died age 19. I suspect that it may have been an error in either the chiseling of the grave marker, or else in the transcription and that September 1819 aged 19 years should have read: September 1849 aged 49 years.

In memory of Robert William Jackson whose remains were buried in the vault below on the 18 February 1861 this tablet is inscribed by a friend of his early days.
