This family begins in about 1801 with a Joseph JACKSON. The question remains: Where did he come from and when did this family first take root in Richhill? . Since businesses and farms often were passed down from father to son,one possible clue is that he was both a leather merchant and a farmer. It will be worth looking for other JACKSONs in related trades: leather merchants, cordwainers, shoemakers. .Co. Wicklow – given the marriage of Robert JACKSON to Anna HALL (see footnotes) is a place outside of Armagh that may be worth focusing on.Another clue may be in following links to GORDONs, the surname of his wife. Her family may connect to the GORDONs who married into the family of JACKSONs of Lisnaboe, Co. Meath. Also, since families in the strong farmer and merchant class tended to intermarry repeatedly in succeeding generations, the connections to the GIRVINs of Roan and Moneyquin, Co. Armagh are worth keeping an eye on.

There are a significant number of other JACKSONs in the various aspects of the leather trades in Ireland in this time frame and earlier. From their leases, we can see that they shared a similar social status. Many would have been in the Cordwainers’ Company. SEE: JACKSONs in the London ROLLS and http://www.cordwainers.org/  .

The Company’s first ordinances by King Henry III in 1272. The Ordinances imposed regulations on the craft of shoemaking within the City of London and stipulated that Cordwainers must work with the finest ‘cordwain’, goatskin leather from Cordova in Spain. They also quite clearly specified that Cordwainers must make new shoes from the best quality new leather, whereas cobblers must only repair old shoes with old leather.

Trades that often connected with them included tanners, livery makers, and shoemakers – even the tangential business of tallow-makers and butchers. Their family crests, when they had them,  often included goats – because of goatskins used in the trade .SEE: Jackson Family Crests. The following is simply a quick fly-past of possible connections. Later, I will assemble the various bits of evidence in a separate page.
