Bartley Seventh Generation

       133.  Robert Thomas WRIGHT was born in Monaghan, Co Monaghan, Ireland on 25 November 1864. [i]   He was known to family and friends as Tim. Tim worked for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, commencing in the London office in 1883 before moving to the Far East in May 1886.  His postings in Asia included Hong Kong, China, Japan and Burma.  He was the manager of the Yokohama Branch in Japan when that city was devasted by a massive earthquake in 1923.  Tim retired around 1925. [ii]

Tim married Lucy DANBY circa 1898.  The archives of the bank record that in April 1898 he applied for and was granted permission to marry.  In September of that year the board of the bank voted him a sum of $2500 on the occasion of his marriage in view of the "important post he held and the most efficient way in which he performs his duties". Lucy was born in 1875. [iii]   Lucy died 22 October 1938 at Barton End in Alton, Hampshire, England. [iv]   Her funeral was held on 25 October 1938 at the parish church in Frimley, Surrey, England. [v]   Tim died 24 June 1937 at Barton End in Alton, Hampshire, England. [vi]   His funeral was held on 26 June 1937 at the Parish Church in Frimley, Surrey, England. [vii] Robert Thomas WRIGHT and Lucy DANBY had the following children:

185       i. Lucy Margaret WRIGHT .  She was known to family and friends as Peggie.        Peggie's engagement to David Locke NEWBIGGING was announced in The Times newspaper on 2 April 1929. [viii]   They were married on 30 December 1929 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Shanghai, China. [ix]   He was the son of T. Kennedy NEWBIGGINGPeggie died 20 June 1970 in London, England. [x]   Her funeral was held on 25 June 1970 at St Peter's Church in Frimley, Surrey, England. [xi]

186      ii. Robert F. WRIGHT Robert's engagement to Edith Marjorie SINTON was announced in The Times newspaper on 12 December 1927. [xii]   They married on 20 November 1928 at St John's Cathedral in Hong Kong. [xiii]   Known by her second name, Marjorie was born on 13 June 1902. [xiv]   Marjorie died circa 1997 in England. [xv]   Her death was registered in December 1997 in the Uckfield regsitration district.

       136.  Martha Carlyle WRIGHT was born in Monaghan, Co Monaghan, Ireland on 30 October 1870. [xvi]   Martha married Thompson BROWN . [xvii]   Thompson was born on 21 August 1868 in Barronstown, Co Louth, Ireland. [xviii]   He was the son of Thompson BROWN and Elizabeth JACKSON .  Like many members of his extended family, Thompson was employed for some time by the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. He joined the staff of the London office in 1886, and worked there for four years before moving to the Far East in May 1890.  In Asia he was initially stationed at Shanghai, then Tientsin, Hong Kong, and finally Amoy in 1899. [xix] In The History of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, H.H. King included an account by staff member F.T. Koelle of his arrival in Hong Kong: (The launch) discharged the distinguished party who had come to meet us: the great TJ, Chief Manager, Hawkins, sub-manager, Peter, Accountant and (A.) Coutts, sub-accountant, and Thompson Brown who is the 'gardener' and therefore took us through the garden across the road in front of the Bank, which is the Bank's property and worth one million dollars, and is now full of very pretty carnations, roses, heliotrope and other flowers.  The inverted commas around 'gardener' suggest that Thompson's horticultural activities were 'extra-curricula' rather than his main employment. It is not known as yet when or where Martha and Thompson married, or where their son was born, but at some stage Thompson returned to Ireland to live. Thompson died suddenly on 28 August 1942 at Killynure House in Milford, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland. [xx]   A neighbour Eugene Fegan (who was seven years old at the time) recalled: "Thompson Brown, he just dropped dead in the yard", and later "I seen him walk down the lane there, between the chestnut trees. Out walking, he were. And he just like that. Fell over. It made a big impression on me." [xxi] Martha died 8 March 1907. [xxii] Martha Carlyle WRIGHT and Thompson BROWN had the following child:

187       i. George Austin Thompson BROWN was born circa 1902. [xxiii]   Occupation: farmer.  He had a dairy farm of 77 acres at Stanhope, Victoria, Australia. George died 26 August 1963 in Stanhope, Victoria, Australia. [xxiv]   On 14 October 1963 a grant of Letters of Administration for George 's estate was made in Victoria, Australia. [xxv]   As he died unmarried and intestate, and no next-of-kin or relatives could be located in Victoria, the grant was made to the Public Trustee. His estate was valued at £24750, [xxvi] and proceeds from this were eventually distributed to his Brown and Wright cousins. [xxvii]

         138.  James Francis WRIGHT was born in Ballinode, Parish of Tedavnet, Co Monaghan, Ireland on 17 November 1874. [xxviii]   Like so many family members, Jim made his way to the Far East. He was a share broker - probably a member of the firm Wright & Hornby, though this has still to be confirmed. James married Mary MENARY on 2 April 1902 at the Cathedral Church of St John in Victoria, Hong Kong. [xxix]   Known to family and friends as Molly, she was born on 5 November 1872 in Ireland. [xxx]   She was the daughter of William MENARY and Mary JACKSON .

Jim and Molly were both living in Kong Kong at the time of their marriage, but by the following year when their son was born, the family was based in Manilla in the Phillippines. [xxxi] A letter written by Molly's mother suggests they were back in Hong Kong by 1906: I am in a little anxiety about Mollie and her care just now as there has been a terrible typoon in Hong Kong and loss of life and I am sure she has been well frightened if not hurt. [xxxii]

Some time in the mid-1910s, the family returned to Ireland to live.  After staying with Molly's mother at Urker in Crossmaglen, they moved to their recently-purchased property Gilford Castle, in Co Down, where Jim became a farmer.  This home still remains in the family.  Molly's mother Mary GRIFFIN wrote of the move: We were put out of our way here between bad weather and Jim and Molly packing up to leave Urker for Gilford Castle, a big place Jim has bought.  He will not be far from Glenbanna.  Cis Reid helped all she could in getting them settled but they are still far from that as Molly has a very bad cold and is in bed here while Jim is in Gilford trying to housekeep for himself. [xxxiii] She also wrote of a visit there shortly after: I spent a week at Gilford Castle with Jim and Molly and a day at Glenbanna.  The Castle is a lovely place and I felt lost in the big rooms and long and numerous passages. [xxxiv]

For a time, Jim and Molly also owned Urker, which they purchased around 1935. [xxxv] Molly's aunt Maggie McCULLAGH noted: Urker belongs to Jim & Molly Wright.  They bought it when Tommy Jackson sold it.  Molly loves it for old times sake. [xxxvi] Sadly, the house is now derelict. Molly died 29 August 1946. [xxxvii]   She was buried in Creggan Church of Ireland graveyard in Creggan, Co Armagh, Ireland. James died 22 April 1954 at Gilford Castle in Gilford, Parish of Tullylish, Co Down, Northern Ireland. [xxxviii]   His death certificate recorded the cause of death as carcinoma of the lung and chest.  He was buried in Creggan Church of Ireland graveyard in Creggan, Co Armagh, Ireland.
