I started this page of deeds seeking to understand why a
Capt. Francis JACKSON had been awarded the townland of Clonsast after 1641 and before
1670. This grant was unusual for a few reasons, but significantly, it was smack
in the middle of a cluster of townlands awarded at about the same time to the
Col William PUREFOY (1584-1659). Was there a connection between the two men
or their families? So far: No. ... Sigh … My vain hope is that all this
research may be useful to others.

Co. Deeds.
Sharon Oddie Brown. April 15, 2021 NOTE: I hope to soon update this with a companion piece that will track the family tree. |
Before 1708, when memorials of deeds began to be recorded in
Dublin, the Kings Co. holdings of Col William PUREFOY (1584-1659) of Caldecott,
Warwickshire (who had died sans issue) were inherited by one of his
cousins, another William PUREFOY (1622-1699). The 2nd William had been born at Wolvers Hill,
Warwickshire and had died at Purefoy’s Place, Kings Co. Three of his brothers - Basil, Peter & Arthur - had also received land grants
in Ireland in recognition of their service to Cromwell. The descendants of
these four siblings were connected to each other through various land dealings even
though they lived in a number of Irish counties, namely Kings, Galway, Tipperary,
Dublin and Cork. These deeds track how the ownership of their leases popcorned
between sons, brothers, cousins, and as well between their various wives (and
occasionally daughters) throughout the next three centuries.

SOURCE: Purefoy of Gortnekelly, Eyrecourt An excellent Blog by Donal Burke. The first of the family to
reside in East Galway was James Purefoy, who was described as 'of
Gortnekilly, Co. Galway', son of Arthur Purefoy of Skreen, Co. Meath, M.P.
for Kells from 1661-1666. (The heraldic Visitation of Warwickshire of 1682,
however, described Arthur, the sixth son of Gamaliel Purefoy, as 'Arthur
Purefoy of Ireland' who 'married ye daughter of a Bishop there but died
without issue.' The 1619 Visitation of Leicestershire also gave Arthur as
without posterity.) Arthur's elder brother William settled at Clonbulloge
and Purefoy's Place , King's County in the seventeenth century and also
served as M.P. for Ennis during the same period as his brother's
parliamentary term. Three of Arthur's brothers were established in Ireland;
William, Basil and Peter and were younger brothers of George Purefoy of
Wolvershall or Wolveshill, son of Gamaliel Purefoy, son of George Purefoy of
Wolvershall in Warwickshire, the fifth son of Michael Purefoy of Caldecott |
