Probates for JACKSONs held at the UK National Archives. Many of these JACKSONs were in the merchant class, and had links to JACKSON families who held land in Ireland. More work is needed to determine all the links, but this page is a start.

2020 Notes of wills from UK National Archives

It is useful to cross reference these probates with other tables of data which I have assembled for my Silver Bowl site:

·         London Rolls.

·         JACKSON - Marriages – London.

·         Abstracts of Probates: Canterbury

·         JACKSON mentions in Grays Inn

·         JACKSONs mentioned in Merchant Taylor’s School

Useful material available on other sites includes:

·         St Mary the Virgin, Chatham. Kent. Monumental inscriptions.

·         Livery Companies database.

·         Worshipful Company of Girdlers On UK Gov site:

·        An Historical Account of the Worshipful Company of Girdlers, London2009 William Dumville Smythe

·         Catalogue of the charters, deeds and manuscripts in the Public Reference Library at Sheffield.

NOTE to self: I also need to cross reference these probates with a file on my computer (which I will upload when it is ready): <JACKSON Heraldic Arms or Crests>. (filed under Family Names/Jackson  - other related files are filed under Family Names/Jackson/Crests/ ….

The highlighted probates indicate notes from watermarked copies. The rest are from pdfs that I had ordered. The notes made from watermarked files are less complete and reliable.

NOTE: Possible link to: JACKSONs of Kilkenny. The land grants to Edmond JACKSON at Corluddy, Portnascully, and Dungooly, all in Co. Kilkenny were key to assembling this Jacksons of Kilkenny family tree. Benthams Abstracts filled in some of the gaps. Was he the Capt. JACKSON who had been dislodged from Co. Antrim? Was he a Royalist, or was he one of those who was caught up in the sweep when the government was transporting all Presbyterians from Antrim & Down in 1653? There is much that I do not know here. The 1647 Probate of Will of Rev Thomas JACKSON Canterbury coupled with the 1658 March 14 Probate Will of Elizabeth JACKSON, his wife, lead us to their grandson Lodowick JACKSON and to understanding his connections to County Cork in the mid-1600s. It is likely that some of his descendants rooted there. For example, the ancestry of Alderman Ambrose JACKSON has yet to be taken that one step back toto connect to likely roots in Britain. SEE: Jacksons of Canterbury & Nantwich England and Co. Cork, Ireland. This Family tree starts in Lancashire with the 1571 birth of Rev. Thomas JACKSON. He became the prebendary of Canterbury Cathedral and was a grandfather of Lodowick JACKSON of Youghall Co. Cork who served as a customs and paymaster in the mid-1600s. In the 1640s, Rev. Thomas experienced financial set-backs and had to retrench. The financial circumstances of his family was like many of their class whose sons lived in Ireland and worked as merchants, military, clerics, or government officials.

1658 March 14 Probate Will of Elizabeth JACKSON. For example, the ancestry of Alderman Ambrose JACKSON has yet to be taken that one step back to connect to likely roots in Britain.

Three daughters: Grace, Frances (2nd daughter) and Margaret [youngest daughter]

Lands in Catwick in Holderness.

eldest son Samuel JACKSON

proved by Marmaduke JACKSON, Son.

NOTE: Marmeduke, the testator, may be the Marmaduke b. 1578 at Burton, Yorkshire, son of Sir Anthony JACKSON & Margaret FROBISHER (even though his status is that of Yeoman, not gentry). Also of interest, since Marmaduke is not such a common name, is the fact that there was a Marmaduke JACKSON named in Sir William FLOWER's 1662 Muster Roll included in the Ormonde Papers.

It seems that Marmeduke, the testator, was married twice. Children from 1st marriage: Samuel JACKSON & Marmaduke JACKSON. The son Marmaduke was born 1636 (based on his mar. record). A record of Marmaduke (the testator's) 2nd marriage: Marmaduke Jackson and Grizel Thrusk mar 25 Aug 1645 Sutton, Yorkshire LDs. Their children included: Grace, Frances & Margaret.

1677 John JACKSON will - house in Coleraine Mentions a brother Thomas JACKSON of Westchester.

Of interest to me is that several of the JACKSONs of Kirby Lonsdale were also resident and active in Coleraine at this time. One of them, Capt. William JACKSON (1628-1688) had held leases in the Clothworkers Proportion from 1663. He was a son of Rev. Richard JACKSON (1602-1681). Rev. Richard had a brother John JACKSON (b. abt 1609). There may or may not be a connection. Although the lots 9 & 10 in Coleraine were willed to Paul JACKSON, a brother of John JACKSON, I have yet to find a record of him there.
