Significantly,
I can make no matches to our family tree for any of the COULTERs mentioned in the parts of the Parish
Register which are available for Creggan Church. This is curious. There are COULTERs
mentioned that tie into our family tree in "Creggan: Guide to Creggan Church
and Graveyard". Kevin McMahon & Jem Murphy. Creggan Historical Society,
1988 and also in "Creggan Journal of the
Creggan Local History Society", 1989
Vol 1-No 3. Ed. Kevin McMahon. I suspect that we must be missing some of the
connecting bits. Unfortunately the BMD records that I have been able to find, only
cover a limited time frame, the earliest being a burial in 1807.

COULTERs from Annavaghy, Parish of Creggan, Co. Louth
Annavaghy is on the south-eastern border of Cavananore and is a townland long
associated with the COULTERs. It is about 5km south-east of Creggan Church (SEE
Map 36 of Ordnance Survey). It is likely also significant that Andrew Coulter
BRADFORD (1788-1846) & Thomas BRADFORD(1797-1872) held lands at Annavaghy
as well as Cavananore. They were both grandsons of Barbara BRADFORD nèe
COULTER.

COULTERS from Dorsey, Parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh –
Dorsey is a townland about 3km north of Creggan Church. (Note: Dorsey is in red when I inferred Dorsey).
- It borders Ummeracam, a townland where the COULTERs of
Silverbridge resided in the 20th Century. Also of interest, a
condolence letter in 1918 has an address: “Dorsey, Silverbridge” (from
Sally STOKES). Gordon COULTER is shown as residing in the “South Townland”
of Ummercam (Ball) in records of 1935, 1951 and 1974. This would be Andrew
Gordon COULTER, son of Andrew COULTER & grandson of John COULTER (and
mentioned in the Guide to Creggan Church and Graveyard).
- In the 1826 records, a Samuel COULTER as well as a widow
COULTER resided here.
- In the 1864 records, a Samuel COULTER leased 11 acres and
a house (valued at £1.5.0) at Dorsey from Walter McGeogh BOND (NOTE: BOND
also owned Silverbridge, the house purchased by Andrew COULTER in the
early 1900s). He also leased 10 acres in Ummercam (Johnson) from Graham
JOHNSTON. In 1901, a Robert COULTER was resident there.

COULTERs from Mounthill, Parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh. This townland is 3km southwest of Creggan Church. A Mounthill House still shows
on contemporary Ordnance survey maps (Sheet 28).
- According to Parish of
Creggan. Vol. 1 : Notes from church registers, vestry books, etc. a Samuel COULTER of Mounthill was murdered February 1849
SOURCE: Item 4, LDS1279353 Item 4.Also at Armagh Museum.
- Actually, he was assaulted in 1849, but murdered in 1851 (see various items under Newsclippings). He married Mary BAILIE on March 24, 1846. SOURCE: IGI (the town Barronstown, Co. Louth is given. After his death, there was a record of a Mary COULTER holding
lands at Shortstone West in Griffiths in 1854.
- A will was probated for a Samuel COULTER
in 1841 who was a farmer at Mounthill. It is probable that he was the father
of the Samuel COULTER who was murdered.
- The COULTER children who were confirmed
are (in order of birth with births deduced from age at confirmation): Sarah (1806), Mary (1807),Anne (1808),
Margaret (1809), Jane (1813) and John (1817). They may be from one family,
but could also easily be from several COULTER families.
- November 5, 1861 a Margaret COULTER married a Patrick QUINN in Creggan Parish. Her father was Samuel COULTER. She may fit into this bunch. The groom's father was John QUINN.
