1860 March 15 Mary JACKSON of Rockmount, Co. Monaghan Probate. A close read of this will reveals connections between several JACKSONs, who resided in the counties of Antrim, Monaghan & Armagh. Many emigrated to Australia. The testator, Mary JACKSON (?-1860) of Rockmount, was a daughter of a John JACKSON of Banbridge. He in turn was likely connected to and possibly even a son of Rev. Robert JACKSON (b. bef 1750-1788) minister at 1st Dunmurry Presbyterian Church (Dunmurry, Parish Drumbeg (Antrim portion), in the Barony Belfast Upper who in turn was the son of Rev. Henry JACKSON (b. bef 1717-1795), minister 1st Presbyterian/Arian church, Banbridge. More work is needed. They can be found at: JACKSONs of Co. Down who first settled in Dundonald (a page which needs updating).

Sharon Oddie Brown. January 15, 2024 Update January 18, 2024. I have added notes on some deeds which may shed light on Mary JACKSON's ancestry, as well as maps of townlands where she held leases. I have also updated several footnotes.

[1] Mary JACKSON (?-1860)

·         Unmarried, daughter of John JACKSON of Banbridge. NOTE: The value of the land in her known leases would have been the result of inheritances, but we do not yet know How she came by them. Her parents? Aunts and/or uncles? Other relations? She held leases at: Carrickbrackan, Parish Killevy (Upper Orior portion), Barony Orior Upper, Co. Armagh, at Ballyvally, Parish Seapatrick, Barony Iveagh Upper, Upper Half Co. Armagh (from her Aunt Lowry), as well as for land at Rockmount,  Drumfaldra,  Parish of Aghnamullen, in the Barony of Cremorne, Co. Monaghan. All were likely related to the linen industry.

·         Before she lived at Rockmount, she lived nearby at Derryrusk Cottage [Derryroosk, Parish Aghnamullen, Barony Cremorne],. SEE: ROD: 1853-24-217.

·         Death: 26 June 1860. Date of birth unknown.

·         Probate: The Will with one Codicil of Mary Jackson late of Richmount in the County of Monaghan Spinster deceased who died 26 June 1860 at Richmount aforesaid was proved at Armagh by the oath of James Robert Girdin [sic – GIRVIN] of Roan in the County of Armagh Merchant one of the Executors. Effects under £1,000. Date of Probate: 31 October 1860

[2] Rockmount:

·         It is at Drumfaldra,  Parish of Aghnamullen, in the Barony of Cremorne. Many Jacksons from Drumfaldra are buried at Tullycorbet Church Cemetery. They are included in the family tree of the Lisnaboe JACKSONs.

·         Griffiths Valuation 1858. #1 on Map of Drumfaldra. Mary JACKSON leased from George BROWNE house offices and land valued at £15.0.0. Land = 15a 1r 24p, valued at £11.0.0. Buildings valued at £4.0.0

·         Description: Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1830, with outbuildings now incorporated as further accommodation. Original house has pitched slate roof with carved timber bargeboards over rafter ends and to gablet over entrance bay, rendered stepped profile chimneystacks to gable ends and having stepped copings and octagonal clay chimneypots. Render mainly removed to expose rubble limestone walls with squared quoins. Camber-headed window openings with brick voussoirs, stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed window openings to first floor rear with brick voussoirs and square-headed to ground floor with stone lintels. Round-headed doorway to front elevation with brick voussoirs and square-headed to rear with stone lintel, having recent timber door. Block to north end of house is slightly recessed two-storey with similar roof details to house, two openings to first floor and four to ground, with segmental and round-headed window openings with similar details to house, and segmental-headed doorway Further recent block at right angle to north end of recessed block has similar roofing to house, rendered walls, square-headed window and wide segmental-headed door opening. Set in own grounds, having single rubble stone pier to garden entrance to west of house, rubble stone walls to driveway and site entrance.

One of several medium-sized houses in the district, this house is indicative of the prosperity of the Aughnamullen area in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a prosperity strongly associated with milling and the linen industry. The pitched roof with raised central gablet to the front elevation is a feature in this area, also seen in Bowelk House and Cumry Lodge. The symmetrical elevation of the house contrasts pleasingly with the more informally arranged elevations of the other blocks. SOURCE: National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
