These JACKSONs of Kirkby Lonsdale and Lancashire included the famed blacksmiths who did much work that still stands in Kirkby Lonsdale today. My personal interest in this tree is twofold:
· I am curious to find out whether this branch is connected to William
JACKSON (abt 1575-1626) of Kirkby Lonsdale (the lands he once owned included
the land where the current Royal Hotel can be found). This line of JACKSONs had
several sons who emigrated to Ireland in the 1600s: Coleraine and Dublin, as
well as elsewhere.
· This branch may also be connected to the JACKSONs who were active
in Drogheda in the mid-1600s. They were part of the emergent yeoman, merchant,
tradesman class (there seem to have been overlaps).

NOTE: It may
be a coincidence, but the family crest of the LOWTHER family, one of the
dominant families in the early days of Kirkby Lonsdale, was a dragon. The Red
Dragon is at 59 Main Street. It is a 17th C building. Archaeological

Kettle now is) was the original place of the market until 1822 when it was moved
in front of the current Royal Hotel. |
CLUES: The JACKSONs of Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale may
be a good place to look for earlier ancestors, partly because they also were engaged in the trade of blacksmiths. Looking at the convergence of
the name JACKSON and the trade of blacksmith, a John JACKSON blacksmith of
Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale had a will probated Feb 19, 1673. There was an
earlier probate for a John the elder JACKSON of Puddleshaw Casterton, Kirkby
Lonsdale dated Nov 11, 1641. Also there was a 1594 probate for the will of Leonard JACKSON of Casterton. He had more than one house, and his will named two
of his brothers, Henry & Thomas, as well as two of his sons: Christopher
and Roger. I will follow up on this. |
NOTE: If George JACKSON
died age 85 as recorded on his grave stone, then he would have been born abt
1756. It is possible that he wasn’t born in Orton (in spite of that being in
Westmorland. One possibility is that he was christened at Hornby, which is very
near to K-Lonsdale to the SW, on the way to Lancaster. The date fits the

PROBATE COPY OF THE WILL OF WILLIAM POTTER – 1678 Copy Will of William Potter dated 25th August 1678... dwelling att the signe of the Royal Oak in Kirby Kendall in the county of Westmoreland, gentleman. He gave to his wife Anne all his goods and chettels whatsoever, she paying thereout all his debts, legacies etc. He further gave her his three closes and parcels of ground commonly called Little Barnhill Closes, lying together and containing by estimation 5 acres, and also all that new barn which he built, adjoining to the same part thereof.
