My purpose in compiling this selection of notes on GOREs was to better understand the family connections between GOREs, SALEs (aka SALLs) and JACKSONs – specifically Rev. William JACKSON (abt 1737-1795) of Dublin the (in)famous member of the United Irishmen who died in the Court while awaiting sentencing. In news reports published just after his death, his mother was described as a GORE with relations in Co. Sligo and a Dr. SALE was described as an uncle. NOTE: There are close to 500 records of GOREs noted by Betham. In this particular search, Not every record is noted here. I focused on the names of the women.

Bethams Abstracts GORE

Betham’s Genealogical Abstracts. Sir William Betham (1779-1853) was appointed deputy Ulster King of Arms in 1807 and Ulster King of Arms in 1820.  Betham spent a lifetime collating indexes and abstracts of the manuscripts held in the Record Tower of Dublin Castle.  Although Betham was a polymath, it is his work in the Records Tower for which Irish genealogists and family historians are most grateful.

There was a Gethin Estate in Co. Sligo.

Landed Estate Records: Under the Restoration settlement Richard Gethin, created a baronet in 1665, was granted a large estate in county Cork (over 5,500 acres) and premises in Waterford and Wexford. He established the manor of Gethinsgrott, barony of Fermoy, in county Cork. The Gethin family later acquired extensive lands in the south eastern part of County Sligo as well as property in Sligo town. They also leased property from other estates notably the Gore Booths. In 1853 parts of Sir Richard Gethin's estate was offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court. By 1906 Percy Gethin still held over 200 acres of untenanted land at Kingsborough, barony of Tirerrill.

He succeeded his father in the title. He married in June 1786, Anne, daughter of Thomas Nagle, esq. of Mount Nagle, co. Cork, aunt to the present Sir Richard Nagle, Bart, by whom he had issue the late Capt Richard Gethin, and other children. Capt. Gethin died on the 4th Jan. 1835, leaving issue by Jane, third daughter of Lt. Col. South, of Heavitree, near Exeter, the present Sir Richard Gethin, who has succeeded his grandfather in the title, and three other children.
