Kildare Valuations for JACKSONs and LYNCHs. WARNING: These notes were taken at great speed, and need to be double-checked against the originals. In my haste, I did leave off the identifying dates of the books that the entries were transcribed from. Their use is primarily as a starting point. NOTE: Valuation books contain the revisions of ownership recorded after the Griffiths Valuations wich took place in the mid-1850s.

Kildare Valuations

In this lot of Valuation Records, I was looking for a farm that Sir Thomas JACKSON (1841-1915) possibly owned in Co. Kildare. The story is that he brought up his farm manager, Patrick LYNCH from Kildare to manage his farm at Cavananore. I started with possible JACKSONs, with the hope that I might be able to link them to trees of ancestors that I have already compiled. Then I looked at LYNCHs. There, I had more luck.

From the work that I did on The Descendants of James LYNCH, I knew to start with two townlands: Kill and Lughil. It seems that Patrick LYNCH sr. took over the lease at Lughill at about the time of his wife’s death. She was Julia COLETON, and the previous owner of the lease at Lughill was William COLLOTON. No doubt, they are the same family. The house and garden would have been modest, based on the valuations, but the family retained the lease over several decades. Likewise with the lease at Kill, where the family name is connected with the townland for at least three decades. Kill is about 3 km north of Lugill

Since we have established the mid-late 1800s whereabouts of the LYNCH’s, it would be reasonable to start looking for JACKSON farms within a ten mile radius. It does not mean that they may not be further away, but it is a place to start.

NOTE: In the Probates of Jacksons who died in Co. Kildare, there are two who died at Kill: Sophia JACKSON d 1892 and Richard JACKSON d 1899.

Lughil[l] – no mentions of LYNCH or JACKSON in most recent years. The name WALSH may be a connection to the LYNCH family, and is mentioned in various places. Also of interest – there is a graveyard there.
