This file is a work in progess - I will record updates, so it may be worth checking in from time to time.
Sharon Oddie Brown. January 23, 2011.
Update March 16, 2012 Added Wexford Census data to Inch transcription.
Update: January 29, 2016 George JACKSON & Samuel JACKSON Dublin added. NOTE: I have included a lot of detail on the addition for Sarah JACKSON d. 1865 Dublin because I am exploring where she might fit in.

Jackson Gravemarkers

NOTE: I have transcribed several records of JACKSONs mentioned in grave markers using a range of sources, and my list is by no means exhaustive. Many of them come from notes that I made at the National Archives in Dublin, others from the volumes held at the Linen Library in Belfast, others from the internet, and finally some from the Enneclan publication: Brian J. Cantwell’s Memorials of the Dead. I recommend purchsing from them - in part because it helps to ensure that future records will be digitalized. Also, I have not included the ones that can be found in the excellent records of Co. Down graveyards. Many of them can be found at Ros Davies web site. They can also be found in the series edited by R.S.J. Clarke.

Part of what I am attempting to do in the table that follows is to connect all of these JACKSONs to known family trees – or as many as is humanly possible. This is a huge project and will take some considerable time. Many hands make light work, so if you see one that is "yours", please let me know and I will fill in the notes accordingly.

Frequently, I have repeated the text from a grave marker several times, but this is to enable me to record the various names with their date of interment. It makes a search by name and/or date much simpler. The rootsweb tree that I frequently refer to is the version that I update most frequently, but individual trees are sometimes more easily followed at my web site on the page dedicated to Family Trees. This page also includes several trees that are not in the Rootsweb version.

COUNTY KILDARE: FONTSTOWN OLD CHURCH -

On a tablet just inside

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF JOSEPH JACKSON fourth son of Richard Jackson of this Parish who in his 24th year of his age unfortunately lost his life when bathing on the morning of 12th June 1835.

In the lone mansion of the sacred tomb

Rests a lov’d friend who perish’d in his bloom,

No time allow’d to wean him from the world,

But in a moment from existence hurled.

Deep. Deep he sunk beneath the dark cold wave,

But not too deep for sovereign Grace to save.

As a small token of esteem this tablet was sent from America, and caused to be erected by his afflicted brother Thomas Jackson, of New York, Merchant.

NOTE: In the 1901 Census of Ballyellin, Lower (Ballylarkin, Wexford) House 1: Thomas JACKSON age 68 (b abt 1833), farmer & widower; son, Richard age 26; daughter-in-law Margaret age 36 [NOTE: I suspect an error – I suspect she was closer to 26, based on 1911 census]; Eliza, grand-daughter, age 1; Thomas grandson (no age given – presumably an infant).

HUNCH: It would seem that Thomas (d 1903) and Elizabeth (d 1895) had a son Robert (d age 21) & a son Richard. It is likely that Thomas (b 1833) was a son of John (b1801) and Jane (b 1797).
